I love having a makeup blog, because I can spend over $50 on mascara in one day and not feel (too) guilty. When I was looking for a good mascara to buy a while ago, I realized that every mascara out there has dedicated fans and rave reviews. It was so overwhelming. Finally I decided once I’d tested and either loved or hated multiple mascaras, I would write up a comparison. This post compares 3 higher end mascaras. I’m still working on a drugstore version of this post, but I’m so excited to add my opinion to the masses.
I’m going to start to day by describing the pros and cons of the three as well as what they’re formulated to do and what I think of their wands (which can make a world of difference). Before sharing which I think would work the best for you based on your lashes and what you want out of your lashes.
Mascara Review #1
Tarte’s Lights, Camera, Lashes – This mascara has been clinically proven to increase your lash growth and is formulated to condition and protect your lashes. I have to admit, I haven’t noticed any growth or additional length, but I have pretty full, long eye lashes anyways so it’s hard to tell. I love how gentle it is on my eyes though, I never get dry ichy eyes even when I wear it 4-5 days in a row. It is also really easy to remove, but it doesn’t melt off your face in the summer. This mascara is available in black.
Mascara Review #2
Too Faced’s Better Than Sex – That’s a big claim to live up to, but if anything does it, it’s this mascara. The hour-glass shaped brush evenly distributes the mascara for for full, voluptuous lashes. The mascara has really great staying power all year round, and doesn’t flake at all. It is a little harder to remove, but all in all this is a great product. Available in black
Mascara Review #3
Benefit’s They’re Real – I mentioned wanting to get this a while back and I’m so glad I finally did. This is a great all around mascara that lengthens, volumizes, and holds a curl all day. The brush does a really good job of grabbing all your lashes and maximizing their potential. My favorite part is that the bristles extend all the way around the tip for easy access to all those hard to reach places. (and yes, I have had people ask if I’m wearing falsies) Available in black, brown, and blue.
Which Mascara Fits You Best?
Before I can recommend a mascara to you, you need to have your priorities straight. What are you looking for in a mascara? Would you rather a lengthening or volumizing? Or maybe you have sensitive eyes and want a really gentle formula. Decide what you want most, then scroll down to find out wick of the three fit you the best.
Really quickly, I want to tell you this is not a completely unbiased opinion. I do have a favorite of the three (I’ll reveal it at the end), however I’m trying to help you evaluate what would be best in your situation. All of these are great mascaras but they serve different purposes. Just wanted to throw that out their because I wanted this to be a completely honest review.
If you are a smokey eye girl who loves nothing better then thick heavy lashes or you have sparse or thin lashes that need a lot of bolstering up or … then Better Than Sex is your best fit. It’s a really good addition to any smokey eye and the best volumizing mascara I’ve ever tried. I would not recommend it if you have sensitive eyes or don’t like using eye makeup remover.
If you want length and ease of application or like to wear retro glam makeup or you are just looking for a great product that you don’t have to worry about coordinating with your look…than I would recommend They’re Real. This is my personal favorite because it adds a ton of length and hold a curl really well. The brush is also awesome. This is a very versatile mascara and unless you have extremely sensitive eyes it should work for you.
If you have really sensitive eyes or want to nourish and strengthen your lashes Lights, Camera, Lashes is the way to go. Of the three it isn’t the highest impact, but it does have a lot. Plus, if it encourages lash growth you’ll have more long term impact.
I really hope this helps you, understand the differences and similarities of each, as well as which would be best for you. Please share which mascara fits you best in the comments.
